Japan-Africa Youth Program: Visit to the Embassy of Rwanda in Japan
The Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Japan welcomed students from Lycée de Kigali participating in the Japan-Africa Youth Program, an international exchange initiative launched following the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
The program is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan as part of its youth exchange initiatives and is operated and managed by the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) on behalf of the African Union Commission. The program aims to foster mutual understanding and strengthen ties between Japan and Africa by providing young people with opportunities for meaningful interaction, learning and cultural exchange.
From August 23 to September 5, 2026, participating high school students from Africa are visiting Japan and taking part in a range of activities, including visits to Japan’s advanced technology and innovation facilities, traditional cultural experiences, school exchanges and homestays. Through these experiences, the program seeks to deepen understanding of Japanese society and culture while encouraging young participants to develop international perspectives and build lasting connections with their peers in Japan.
During their Courtesy Visit to the Embassy, the students had the opportunity to learn more about Rwanda’s diplomatic engagement with Japan and to interact with Ambassador Mukasine and Embassy officials.
Ambassador Mukasine welcomed the students and encouraged them to make the most of their time in Japan by actively listening, asking questions, building relationships and exploring opportunities for future cooperation. She emphasized the importance of youth exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the friendship between Rwanda and Japan.
Brother Jean Mfurayase, Principal of Lycée de Kigali, noted that the experience would help the students develop a broader global perspective, discover new opportunities and gain valuable knowledge that could contribute to the development of Rwanda’s future generations. He added that the students were particularly delighted to have the opportunity to visit the Embassy.
Mr. Erito Uchiyama, Representative of JICE, expressed his appreciation to the Embassy for its warm hospitality and acknowledged the support of the Government of Rwanda for the program. He wished the students a successful and enriching stay in Japan, expressing hope that their participation would further strengthen the bridge between the young people of Rwanda and Japan.
Representing the participating students, Ms. Baratimana Yvette shared her hope that the knowledge, skills and experiences gained during their stay in Japan would be shared with fellow students upon their return and contribute to further strengthening the bonds between Rwanda and Japan. She also expressed appreciation to JICE, the Principal and the Ambassador for their support and encouragement.
The Embassy of Rwanda in Japan welcomes opportunities that bring young people together and looks forward to continued exchanges that foster mutual understanding, friendship and future cooperation between Rwanda and Japan.
